The Tuapse locals offer to poll on the issue of a new fertilizer terminal
Local residents submitted yesterday for registration of their initiative group of 13 for holding a referendum on the construction of the terminal at the port of Tuapse, "The North Caucasus Environmental Watch” group reports.
The poll question reads: "Do you consider it necessary to ban the terminals for transshipment of agrochemicals near urban settlements of Tuapse district?".
"The city residents expect the poll results would not allow in the vicinity of their city the operation of a terminal for handling fertilizer of Eurochem’s (Tuapse Bulk Terminal LLC)" – the local green team said.
Earlier, the residents of Tuapse had filed an application for registration of their initiative groups in Tuapse district electoral committee. Later, the group decided to apply to the city electoral committee and to hold the local referendum on the territory of Tuapse city.
The concerned locals have opposed since 2005 the EuroChem Board decision to build at the port of Tuapse its own specialized terminal for transshipment of 2.3m tons of mineral fertilizer annually. The initiative group has been calling on a local referendum over the issue since then.
