Russia calls for joint anti-piracy work
Russia wants to work with the United States and European Union to fight piracy off the African coast and proposes naval forces gathering in the area to coordinate their efforts, according to the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, reports the Moscow Times.
A Russian naval ship is heading towards the east coast of Somalia to help the hijacked Ukrainian ro-ro vessel Faina. The Belize-flagged Faina is carrying 33 Soviet-built T-72 tanks, other weapons and spare parts for armoured vehicles. The pirates are demanding a ransom of USD 20 million, according to information received.
According to Sergei Lavrov Russia will, like the US and EU, act on the basis of United Nations resolutions calling for international action against piracy. The Gulf of Aden is crossed by some 20,000 ships each year.
