Valencia becomes Spanish container port №1
The Spanish Port of Valencia has overtaken Algeciras as the country's leading container port. Figures released for the first eight months of this year show that Algeciras handled 2.2m teu (-2.6%), while Valencia reported throughput of 2.3m teu, an increase of 12.78%.
In contrast, Barcelona, which was passed by Valencia as the second-largest container port in Spain in January 2001, registered just 1.8m teu, up 4.6%.
Valencia owes its success to Mediterranean Shipping Company, which uses several terminals in the port as its main base to tranship boxes throughout the western Mediterranean. It will now be joined by the Grand Alliance, which has also shifted services there.
