Maersk hikes rates from Asia to South America, Canada
Maersk Line is implementing general rate increases on its Far East Asia services to South America and Canada, as part of a rate restoration program, Journal of Commerce reports. The Danish carrier said rates on cargo shipped from Far East Asia to the east coast of South America will go up by $600 per 20-foot equivalent unit, starting Dec. 15. From the U.S. to Far East Asia, rates will increase on Jan. 1, 2012 by $180 per 20-foot and $200 per 40-foot/45-foot high cube dry container.
The planned GRI on shipments moving from Far East Asia to Canada will be $320 per 20-foot, $400 per 40-foot, $450 per 40-foot high cube and $510 per 45-foot high cube container, also effective Jan. 1.
“In order to continue offering our broad portfolio of services and high level of reliability, it will be necessary for us to implement a number of rate increases,” Maersk said in a trade notice.
The move follows a similar GRI announcement by German carrier Hapag-Lloyd on Far East Asia-South America-East Coast trade lane, which will also take effect Dec. 15.
