CSX to start service at APM Terminal Portsmouth
CSX Transportation said it will start on-dock rail service at the Virginia Port Authority's APM Terminal in Portsmouth on Jan. 3, the Journal of Commerce reported.
The new CSX service to APMT comes after the railroad signed an exclusive agreement with Maersk Line to transport its inbound discretionary cargo from the Portsmouth terminal to the Midwest. Mediterranean Shipping and CMA CGM are also switching their business at APM Terminal Portsmouth from Norfolk Southern to CSX.
Before starting its new ondock rail service at APMT, inbound containers had to be drayed to a rail connection with the Commonwealth Railway at Suffolk, Va. The new on-dock rail service builds upon CSX’s National Gateway project to boost rail connectivity between East Coast ports and the Midwest.
CSX said it will continue to provide rail service at the CSX Portsmouth ramp as well as drayage service between Norfolk International Terminal and Portsmouth ramp in coordination with Virginia International Terminals.
