Port of Helsinki passenger traffic tops record 10 million
Year-to-date passenger traffic at the Port of Helsinki has exceeded 10 million people, the Port Authority statistics said. This is the record high throughout the port’s history.
The tenth million passenger was named an Estonian teacher Irina Reidla, who arrived in Helsinki on board the Tallink ferry on December 20.
In 1997, the port of Helsinki handled 8 million passengers. Two years later passenger traffic at the port totaled more than 9 million people.
Port of Helsinki is a major port in Finland, the country’s premier passenger port, which is a gateway for 77% of all passenger traffic in Finland. Cargo throughput of the port in 2010 grew by 12% year-on-year, to 10,921,000 tons, container traffic rose 11% to 399,903 TEUs, with a 13 percent growth (to 488,772 units) in Ro-Ro cargo shipments.
