Three-week port strike at Auckland begins
About 300 workers at the Ports of Auckland began three weeks of strike action this morning, shutting down nearly half the port's container terminal operations at a cost of millions of dollars, reported Radio New Zealand News.
Talks between the Maritime Union and the Port broke down yesterday, with the union extending strike action from two to three weeks.
The Ports of Auckland said the strike would cost US$2.5 million.
Plans are already in place to re-route five ships to other ports this week.
The company said more ships would have to be diverted during the strike though there is concern other ports will not be able to handle the volume of extra work.
