Chinese shipbuilding down by 44 per cent
Chinese shipyards reported a 44 per cent drop in new orders in the first eleven months of 2008, compared to the world average of a 37 per cent decline, reports the newspaper China Daily quoting a report from Clarkson Research Studies. For the period Chinese yards received orders covering 54.26 million tons in total. An explanation for the sharp drop is the falling demand for bulk carriers, which is an important segment for the Chinese shipbuilders.
New shipbuilding orders received by South Korean and Japanese yards in the first eleven months of 2008 dropped by 29 per cent and 18 per cent, respectively, from the corresponding period in 2008. South Korea, China and Japan are the world’s top three shipbuilders.
