ADPC to develop Shahama Port for сommercial, leisure and tourism

On the sidelines of the World Port and Trade Summit 2013, Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) has announced that a new Abu Dhabi-based port project is underway, with the development of Shahama Port into a commercial, leisure and tourism hub, the company reports.

ADPC stated that it will develop the Shahama water basin and land site to have both sales and service facilities for small marine craft and envisages a growth in marine and water club activities in the area, once the first phase is completed in 2014.

While the global economic impact of 2008 had some effect on leisure boat buying in the last five years, there are signs that while the middle-range boats still lag in terms of sales, the very high-end and small leisure boat sectors are seeing healthy and increasing demand once more.

“We see Shahama Port becoming one of the largest one-stop-shops for all leisure boat users in Abu Dhabi,” said Waleed Al Tamimi, Vice President, Project Development, Projects, ADPC, of the announcement, at the World Port and Trade Summit 2013.
ADPC’s master plan designs show that Shahama Port will be home to facilities and recreational amenities that both support the community and the activities in the port. These include: slipways, boat lifts, ramps, water and electrical connections for boats, services centres, a marina clubhouse, restaurants and cafes, a shopping and retail complex and picnic areas, among others.

“The first phase of the project has just got underway and we expect it to be completed in early 2014. When finished, Phase 1 facilities will offer:  100 wet berths for boats up to 55 foot long; 190 dry berth for trailer storage under shades; a large slipway for boats and jet skis; fuelling and retail facilities; two maintenance workshops; and a marina Club House with games room, coffee shops  and other amenities,” Al Tamimi added.

A major attraction for leisure boat users is likely to be its close proximity to attractive islands and sites for leisure boat trips to the likes of: Saadiyat Island (29km); Ras Ghurab (16km); Yas Island (6.4km) and Raha Beach (8km).
Shahama Port is located about 4 km off the main Abu Dhabi – Dubai highway, and it has direct access to all the surrounding residential areas, in the vicinity of Shahama. Public transport links also now support access and traffic to and from Shahama area and port.
ADPC owns and manages 11 ports in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, including the new Khalifa Port, Mina Zayed, Mussaffah Port and five ports in the Western Region (Al Gharbia). The ports company has previously stated its commitment to developing not just mega-projects such as Khalifa Port, in Taweelah, but also to develop smaller ports across the emirate, for the benefit of the local communities, tourism and trade.
As a master developer and regulator of ports and industrial zones in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, ADPC's core objective is to facilitate the diversification of Abu Dhabi's economy by stimulating development and trade. It supports partners’ infrastructure projects and sets up new companies and joint ventures in the ports and industrial zones sectors.

The company’s AED 26.5 billion (USD 7.2 billion) megaproject – the flagship Khalifa Port and Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (Kizad) - has been designed to be flexible to reflect market needs. Kizad was launched to market in 2010, and the whole of Khalifa Port was inaugurated on 12/12/12 by UAE President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.  The port’s semi-automated container terminal, unique in a radius of 5000 kilometres, was launched on September 1st, 2012. Khalifa Port is now handling all of Abu Dhabi’s TEU container traffic, after its transfer from Mina Zayed, the historic port in the city centre.

Phase One of Khalifa Port has a capacity of 2.5 million container units, plus 12 million tons of cargo. Further phases of development will occur as market demand requires. With all phases complete, Khalifa Port will be able to handle 15 million containers and 35 million tons of cargo per year.
