Key conference speakers and topics announced for Intermodal Europe 2013

Key speakers will tackle important container supply chain issues during conference sessions held during Intermodal Europe 2013, from 8-10 October at the Hamburg Messe in Germany.

John Fossey, Maritime Transport Consultant from Moffatt & Nichol and Consulting Editor at World Cargo News, will chair ‘Intermodal Market Update in the Spotlight’ and ‘Intermodal Supply Chain Forum’ sessions on days one and three.

“Intermodal Europe offers great networking opportunities from a wide selection of industry sectors and looks at the supply chain as a whole, rather than just one element of it” says John Fossey. “There is a growing interest in inland container depots, which is demonstrated at the event.”

Sessions will include a case study in rail logistics, a spotlight focus on Asia and container trade outlook, maritime supply chain improvement and a Shippers’ Panel.

    Shippers’ Panel

The Shippers’ Panel will address current and future key issues for shippers and freight forwarders. Panellists will include Lennart Heip, of Dow Chemical; Roelof Cuperi, of Eksa Graphic Board; Hans Vleugels, of Meelunie; and Marco Wiesehahn, of EVO and the European Shippers’ Council.

“The conference sessions allow the audience and the speakers to step back from their daily business to understand how the industry is doing and where improvements can be made” says Marco Wiesehahn. “It can help to give people a more objective view of the industry.”

Lennart Heip, ITO/MPC/Air Mode Leader Europe, of Dow Chemical Benelux Bv, who will also be on the Shippers’ Panel, adds “The Shippers’ Panel conference session will help to highlight and explain the opportunities that already exist in order to build a truly optimised multimodal supply chain.”

Economic Perspective for the Container Industry

Managing Director of MDS Transmodal, Mike Garratt, will lead a conference session about Worldwide Economic Perspective for the Container Industry, focusing on current challenges and future prospects. A case study in retail logistics looking at ‘Moving towards intermodalism’ will be presented by Carsten Berger, General Manager, H&S Container Line.

    Port Issues for Intermodal Transport

London Gateway, the UK’s first 21st Century major deep-sea container port and Europe’s largest logistics park, will be the subject of a case study in the Innovation Conference Theatre on day one. Peter Ward, Supply Chain Commercial Manager at DP World London Gateway, will be joined by a panel of key partners and there will be a focus on Port Issues for Intermodal Transport.

Looking at the increasing importance of logistics real estate to long-term port success, as well as the development of distribution centres at, or near, ports, Alexandra Tornow, Associate Director - EMEA Research for Jones Lang LaSalle, will lead a conference session on the same day.

    IT Innovation and Technology

Focussing on recent developments in terminal technology and systems, the IT Innovation and Technology Forums will be chaired by Alan Robertson, Director of Webster Robertson.  Automated port operations, future trends in materials, containers and other hardware, and efficient data management to provide better cargo and customer information, will be on the agenda.

Additional conference speakers include Sean Maguire, Business and Product Development of WAM Technologies LLC; Mr. Rüdiger Beckmann of JadeWeserPort; and Holger Koenig, Advisory Service and Project Management from ref-tech Engineering.

    TIGER Demo

Following the success the popular TIGER Project conference sessions at Intermodal Europe 2011, a TIGER Demo Workshop, looking at implementation and internationalisation of demonstrated solutions, will take place on day two of Intermodal Europe 2013.

“The most important thing in the project, and indeed in the freight world, is that shipping companies and freight forwarders all participate,” explains Franco Castagnetti, TIGER DEMO Project Leader.  “There was a great level of participation at Intermodal Europe 2011, with around 160 attendees and we hope that 2013 will prove even more successful.”

    Spotlight on Asia

A spotlight on Asia will include two conference sessions. The first, titled ‘Spotlight on Asia: forecasting container trade outlook across the region’ will be led by Mr. Gopal, Global VP, Transportation and Logistics Practice, of research and consulting company Frost and Sullivan.

“We will provide insight into the Asian economy and container trade, and look at how freight movement will progress in the next few years,” says Mr. Gopal. “We will also discuss the kind of opportunities that currently exist in the Asian markets and how trade is shifting in the Asia-Pacific Region.”

Chairman of All Pakistan Shipping Association, Mr. Aasim Siddiqui, will lead a conference session looking at rail linked inland depots creating value in multimodal trade.

Improving the competitive position of rail freight

“Because a lot of customers and operators attend the Intermodal Europe conference sessions, the speakers are talking to an informed audience” says Director of European Rail Freight Association and Chairman of the Rail Freight Group, Lord Tony Berkeley, who will chair the rail freight forum sessions.

Strengthening European rail freight transport throughout the logistics and supply chain and improving the competitive position of rail freight, will be a focus on day two.

“Sharing views, issues and experiences can help to demonstrate the importance of ensuring that governments and the Commission, as well as regulators, understand the industry and the needs of operators and customers to enable the sector to grow” Lord Berkeley adds.

    Cargo security

‘TAPA Cargo Security Panel: Beating Cargo Crime’ will be chaired by Thorsten Neumann, Chairman of TAPA-EMEA and Head of Cargo Security for Nokia. This Cargo Safety and Security Forum will be of particular interest to cargo owners, shippers, shipping lines, agents, terminal managers, supply chain, transport and logistics professionals.

Intermodal Europe is considered to be the leading event in the container shipping calendar.  “It is encouraging to see growth and positivity within the shipping container industry, despite a challenging economic climate” Ahmed adds.
