Maersk plans Odense shipyard job cuts
Danish shipping and oil group A.P. Moller-Maersk said on Monday it was considering laying off 175 staff at its Odense shipyard following a slump in orders since the first quarter of 2008.
"We've not received any orders for ships since the first quarter of 2008 and during the current economic crisis the outlook for new orders is poor," the yard said in a statement published on its website.
The Odense yard currently has orders for 16 ships and employs 2,000 workers. The yard said it expects employment to drop to around 500 people in the summer of 2010 if it gets no new orders.
