Throughput of Latvian ports down 1.2% to 26.9 mln t in Jan-May 09
In January-May 2009, Latvian ports handled 26.87 million tonnes of cargo (-1.2%, year-on-year), Latvian Ministry of Communications reports. According to the source, the only large port to demonstrate any growth was that of Riga. This year the port of Riga handled 12.23 million tonnes of cargo (+2%, year-on-year), The Baltic Course writes.
The port of Liepaja handled 1.67 million tonnes (-12.7%, year-on-year), Ventspils – 12.45 million tonnes (-2.3%, year-on-year).
In the reported period Latvian ports handled 12.7 million tonnes of dry loose cargo (-0.6%, year-on-year) including 8.8 million tonnes of coal (+16.9%), 1.08 million tonnes of chemical cargo (-36.2%), 528,400 tonnes of woodchips (-17.8%). Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo grew by 6.9%, year-on-year, to 11.66 million tonnes.
Transshipment of general cargo fell by 24.8% to 3.03 million tonnes. Container throughput fell by 21.3% to 70,519 TEU.
