The Federal Agency for Arrangement of Russian Federation Border (Rosgranitsa) has approved a phased schedule project for reconstruction of a permanent border crossing point at the seaport of Kavkaz, RosMorPort’s Taman branch press service said today.

The renovation program was adopted by the agency in its order back in late January. The initiative targeted a throughput increase of the control point.

Port Kavkaz is situated between the Azov and Black Sea on Russia’s part. The port’s 4.5-m-depth berths allow handling as well river boats as seagoing ships. The latter can be loaded and unloaded at off-shore facilities. The major commodity category transshipped via the port’s terminals is bulk cargo (mineral fertilizers, concentrates of various ores, grains). The terminals can handle general, timber, and cargo in containers as well. In 2008 volumes of freight traffic through Kavkaz amounted to 7.028.170 tons. The Port of Kavkaz is included in the list of seaports of Russia, authorized to handle vessels transporting nuclear materials, radioactive substances and products containing them, in boxes and packages (the RF Government order, December 14, 2009 N 1934-p).
