East-Siberian Railroad’s containerized cargo volumes up 10%, to 13.400 containers in Jan-Feb

The volume of containerized cargo loaded on the East-Siberian Railroad (VSZD) in January and February rose by 10.2%, to more than 13.400 containers, most of them, 11.000, were large containers, the company’s press service said.

In February this year more than 120.400 tons of goods (4 percent up from the same period last year) were transported in containers. Of the total volume 115.100 tons of cargoes were loaded into large containers.

The average weight of the loaded container in February amounted to more than 17.9 tons.

The most demanded were large-capacity containers. Transportation of goods in large containers allows businesses to reduce significantly shipment costs, so the volume of goods transported in such containers via East-Siberian Railroad has been increasing. Since the beginning of this year the East-Siberian Railroad carried 82.1% of all containerized cargoes in large containers.

East-Siberian Railroad (VSZD) is a subsidiary of Russian Railways, RZD OJSC. The East-Siberian Railroad length is 3.876 km. In 2009, the VSZD carried 66.8 million tons of commodities.
