Tuticorin port cargo throughput up to 10 million tonnes in April-Aug

The Tuticorin port handled 10 million tonnes (mt) of traffic in the first five months (April-August) of the current fiscal, with the major items being rock phosphate, potash, edible oil, timber logs, industrial coal, ilmenite sand, garnet sand, salt and containers, according to a statement issued by the port It took a much longer time in earlier years to handle the same volume of traffic.
The traffic target for the current fiscal has been set at 25.13 mt, compared to the actual handling of 23.78 mt in 2009-10, the statement adds.
