Experts say Wärtsilä – Transas transaction is a step towards Wartsila localization in Russia

The acquisition of Russia’s Transas by international corporation Wärtsilä, can be probably recognized as a step towards Wartsila localization in Russia, two representatives of Russian shipbuilding industry told IAA PortNews.

Nikolai Shablikov, Deputy Head of the Department of Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, RF Ministry of Industry and Trade, said that “the Russian company is certainly interesting for the foreign corporation as a high technology asset with extensive experience in designing of unmanned ships, which is a new global trend”.

Sergey Buyanov, Director General of Central Marine Research and Design Institute (CNIIMF) says this transaction will contribute to expansion of Wärtsilä’s business since Transas is a successful supplier of digital equipment.

“It is the growth of Wärtsilä business, expansion into new sales markets including those in Russia”, Sergey Buyanov told IAA PortNews.

Wärtsilä earlier said it is to acquire Transas, a global company headquartered in the U.K. The transaction valued at MEUR 210 (enterprise value) is expected to be closed during the second quarter of 2018.

Wärtsilä (headquartered in Helsinki, Finland) is a global leader in smart technologies and complete lifecycle solutions for the marine and energy markets. By emphasising sustainable innovation, total efficiency, and data analytics, Wärtsilä maximises the environmental and economic performance of the vessels and power plants of its customers. In 2017, Wärtsilä's net sales totalled EUR 4.9 billion with approximately 18,000 employees. The company has operations in over 200 locations in more than 80 countries around the world. Wärtsilä is listed on Nasdaq Helsinki.

Transas' vision is to lead the way in creating an ecosystem of harmonised integrated solutions in safety, navigation and ship operations. In creating these solutions Transas unites global maritime stakeholders in the future of e-Navigation and operations.
True to its vision, Transas has introduced THESIS, the Transas Harmonised Eco System of Integrated Solutions. THESIS is a flexible data resource where Ship, Fleet Operations, Academy (simulation & training) and Ship Traffic Control can all be connected to the ecosystem, effectively a community working together on a cloud based shared data platform to enable smarter operations, safety and navigation.
United into a single environment, navigation, simulation, vessel traffic, and fleet management systems become a decision support tool using the data provided by Transas software solutions. Transas operates more than 20 own regional offices and has a global network of partners around the world.
