Shanhaiguan port construction to be completed next year
Shanhaiguan Port is expected to become another important port in Bohai Rim area when the CNY560 million (US$73.5 million) port project is completed by the end of 2008, Xinhua reported.
The new port in Hebei province, which was established to meet the rapidly growing cargo transportation demand in the Qinhuangdao Development, will be able to handle 35,000-tonne vessels, the report said.
The new port, located in Zhangzhuangwan, a town between Hebei and Liaoning provinces, has a 1,892-metre terminal quay where they will build eight berths in the first phase.
The Shanhaiguan Port project has been approved for more than a decade, but the construction was suspended in 1997 for lack of finance.
As the cargo volume of the Qinhuangdao Development Zone, which is near the site of Shanhaiguan Port, continue to grow, construction of a new port became an urgent task for the authorities. And by the end of last year, authorities of Hebei province and Qinhuangdao city decided to resume construction of Shanhaiguan Port, the report said.
