Madagascar completes port modernization
The $30 million first phase modernization programme for Madagascar's main port – the Madagascar International Container Terminal in Toamasina, is complete.
The project had been undertaken by port operator Madagascar International Container Services Ltd (MICTSL) which is a subsidiary of Philippines-based International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI).
MICTSL's investment included the purchase of modern cargo handling equipment, implementation of advanced information technologies and the development of port infrastructure.
$7 million has been spent to rehabilitate and develop the terminal's container yard to enable the use of RTG (rubber tyred gantry) cranes and more than $1 million on automated operating systems.
More than $12 million has also been spent to buy a twin-lift mobile harbour crane, four RTGs and auxiliary mechanization.
The Madagascar International Container Terminal is Madagascar's main trade gateway, handling in excess of 90% of the country's total container cargo throughput.
ICTSI has been extending its global port operations portfolio over the past few years and recently won a 10-year concession to operate the Tartous Container Terminal in Syria. ICTSI was also recently awarded a concession to operate the new container terminal at Subic Bay Freeport.
