Iran's wheat exports to begin through Imam Khomeini Port for 1st time
Deputy Roads & Transportation Minister and Managing Director of IRI Ports & Shipping Organization said here Wednesday Iran's wheat exports would begin in near future through Imam Khomeini Port, for the fist time in history.
Ali Taheri-Motlaq added at a meeting with the press on the sidelines of putting to use the country's largest fiber optic site for ports management at Imam Khomeini Port, "In order to be fully prepared for the purpose, the facilities at this port have been carefully inspected."
He said, "Although the port equipment at Imam Khomeini Port had thus far been merely used for importing wheat, from now on the same facilities would be employed at the service of exporting Iranian crop of wheat."
The deputy minister said that the private sector investment in country's ports during the first three months of the current (Iranian) year (began on March 20th, 2007), has been 1,700 billion rials (over US $170bn).
Taheri-Motlaq said, "Also in order to pursue the national development plans' objectives in country's ports, we have drawn US $630 million from the Hard Currency Fund, $90 million of which has so far been invested in projects proposed by the banks, whose contracts have been signed with them."
He said that the capacity of the country's ports for loading and unloading goods by the end of the 4th Development Plan would be 150 million metric tons.
The deputy minister said that the 150,000 ton jetty of Imam Khomeini Port would be completed by the end of the current year (March 20th, 2008), adding, "The capacity provision at our ports is proceeding satisfactorily currently and our future programs in that regard include installment of heavy loading and unloading machinery." Head of the country's Ports & Shipping Organization said that the private sector has also invested in construction of oil products tanks with a total volume of 430,000 tons, that would be put to use till the summer of 2008.
The Deputy Roads & Transportation Minister officially put to use the largest fiber optic site of the country for ports on Wednesday at Imam Khomeini Port, in the southeast of Khuzestan Province.
The site is a part of the comprehensive naval system of Iran's ports network, and Imam Khomeini Administrative System, as the main sponsor of the national project, is commissioned to launch it at Iran's entire southern ports, enabling them to exchange information easily among themselves digitally.
