Port of Rotterdam reports growth for the first half of the year
Cargo volumes were up 4.2% on the same period in 2006, reaching a total of 196 million metric tonnes (mt).
"We had a strong half year with above-average growth, even though oil supply was lower due to a broken landing, which was compensated by good results at oil products and container shipments," Hans Smits, the port's chief executive, said in a statement quoted by Reuters.
He said he expected cargo volumes to amount to 390 million mt for the full year.
Crude oil volumes declined 8.2% to 45.6 million mt, but cargo volumes of oil products were up by 34.7% to 29.9 million mt, mainly due to growing imports of fuel oil.
There were falls in the volumes of coal and agricultural materials moving through the port. Officials said the declines reflected the mild European winter and a shift in demand for agricultural materials away from Europe to China and the United States.
