    When the captains leave...

It was a great loss for Big Port of St. Petersburg and local shipping companies when Deputy Harbormaster Alexander F. Glukhov suddenly died on January 16. Condolences to the family of Alexander Glukhov were sent from Moscow and other Russian cities, from his foreign friends and colleagues. The industry journalists also commiserate with his family in their sorrow.

"The bitterness of the loss is immeasurable - we lost a great organizer and a real professional in the field of water transport, standing at the beginnings of a new organizational structure of the sea transport in Russia - the Sea Port Authority, responsible for the safety in the Gulf of Finland. Alexander Glukhov put much energy into development of the structure of the St. Petersburg port,"  said Peter Parinov, St.Pb Harbormaset, during a memorial service held at St. Seraphim Cemetery and attended by more than 300 people.

Since 1996 Alexander Glukhov had worked in the St. Pb Port Authority, a few years as harbormaster. He had a reputation of a considerate and fair manager towards his employees, who was eager to understand and to solve any problem. He was able to think, to explain and to work doing his best.

PortNews, at the time of its creation, received a lot of valuable help from Mr. Glukhov. Today, being a major industry media resource, we do recall those wise advices he had given to us. He knew how and taught us to study the documents, how to properly articulate questions. Responsive and honest, a real Сaptain – those are the epithets we have head from most of our fellow journalists who mourn for his untimely death.

To cherished memories of the Captain
