Ukraine and Romania “kick the box”
Black Sea region in 2013-2012, TEU loaded
In 2013, Black Sea container terminals of Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia and Bulgaria handled 2,636,998 TEUs including empty containers without transshipment. The highest growth in handling of loaded containers was registered in Ukraine and Romania.
This review provided to IAA PortNews by Informall BG covers only loaded containers handled by the above countries – 1,842,866 TEUs. So, total growth in 2013 was 12.01%, year-on-year.
The highest growth was demonstrated by Ukraine and Romania. Bulgaria, which saw a decline in HI, Q2 and Q3, managed to demonstrate an increase in 2013 though.

Import accounted for 61.35% of the total volume, export – 38.65%. Handling of loaded/empty containers in the region was 69.88% against 30.12% respectively.
Import accounts for 61.35% of total container throughput in the Black Sea region
In 2013, export of loaded containers in the Black Sea region grew by 19.33%, year-on-year, mainly driven by Ukraine, which demonstrated the record high growth of export volumes last year – 50.13%, and Romania – 22.97%. Export declined in Russia – 17.28%, while Georgia and Bulgaria saw a slight increase. As for import, it increased by 7.84%, mainly with Russia’s import – 13.17%. All countries except for Romania saw an increase of import volumes in the accounting period.

Ukraine boosts export volumes by 50.13%
In the 9-month period, handling of loaded containers was as follows: Ukraine – 34.42%, Russia – 24.99%, Romania – 20.68%, Georgia – 12.25%, Bulgaria – 7.65%.
The top five terminals in terms of total handling of containers in 2013 are the same as in 2012: DPW (Constanta), HPC Ukraine (Odessa), Novoroslesexport (Russia), CTI (Ilyichevsk), APMT Poti (Georgia). All of them saw an increase except for CTI.
As for line operators in the region, nether the list, nor the leaders’ positions changed in 2013: MSC, Maersk Line, ZIM and CMA CGM. The above operators control 63.35% of the total volume of loaded containers in the Black Sea region.

From mid September 2013, G6 service (Hapag Lloyd, OOCL, MOL, NYK, HMM, APL) has been reorganized considerably. Nevertheless, in 2013 the alliance members have improved their aggregate share in the sector of loaded containers from 8.32% to 10.11%.
