Port of Arkhangelsk turnover down 34.5% first 9 months, 2009
Port of Arkhangelsk turnover decreased by 34.5% (to 2 million 536.4 thousand tons) within the first 9 months as compared to the figures of the corresponding period in 2008. As per the port administration information, volume of import cargo transhipment increased by 21.5%. In particular, turnover of loaded containers for import fell by 59.5% (to 13.4 thousand tons), that of other general cargoes grew by 33.7% (up to 292.9 thousand tons).
Export cargo turnover decreased by 31.4% (1 million 11.8 thousand tons). Volume of paper and pulp transhipment fell by 46.2% (to 59.1 thousand tons), of timber cargo – by 10% (to 352.1 thousand tons), of loaded containers – by 71.7% (to 7.3 thousand tons), of coal – by 80.8% (to 76.4 thousand tons), of other general cargoes by 31.8% (to 59.5 thousand tons), of oil products by 1.4% (to 457.4 thousand tons).
Coastwise cargo turnover decreased by 43.1% (to 1 million 218.3 thousand tons).
The port of Arkhangelsk is located in the Northern Dvina river estuary that falls into the White Sea. Arkhangelsk is the port of year-round navigation. Northern Sea Route is linked to the port. Diversification of the port is reflected in the range of the cargo handled: general cargo, paper pulp, hard paper, containers, timber, metals, fertilizers, heavy-lift equipment, bulk cargoes. Port of Arkhangelsk capacity allows it handle up to 4.5 million tons of cargo annually.
