Russian, S. Ossetia establish border crossing checkpoint
The Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of South Ossetia signed a bilateral agreement on establishing a checkpoint on the Russian-South Ossetia border. The document was signed by Dmitry Bezdelov, the head of RosGranitsa (Federal Agency for Arrangement of Russian Federation Border) and Sergei Kolbin, the first Deputy Chairman of the State Security Committee of the Republic of South Ossetia, the head of the Border Guard Service, the Rosgranitsa press service reported.
The agreement establishes a multilateral automobile passenger permanent checkpoint Nizhny Zaramag (Russia) - Rook (South Ossetia) on the Russian-South Ossetia border.
The checkpoint had previously operated under an agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Georgia on the border crossing points across the customs border, signed in Moscow on October 8, 1993.
Russia had recognized the independence of South Ossetia after the August 2008 Georgian forces attack on Tskhinvali and outbreak of war conflict over the former autonomous republic of Georgia. As of now, the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia have been recognized by Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru.
