    Angre Port commences its operations

The Goa based Chowgule Group, which has developed the Port with an investment of Rs 520 crore was inaugurated by Shri Raghujiraje, the ninth descendent of Maratha Admiral Sarkhel Kanhojiraje Angre on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya on Tuesday on April 24, 2012 at Jaigad. The planned Chief Guest for the function Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Prithviraj Chavan had to withdraw last minute due to implementation of election of code of conduct, Daily Shipping Times reports.

The Greenfield port will provide a major boost to the economic development of Konkan region in particular and the nearby hinterland of 350km radius covering the major industrial towns of Kolhapur and Belgaum.

The late Admiral Angre had built a very strong Maratha Navy to counter foreign invaders, which provided the much needed protection to both international and coastal trade in those days.

Angre Port at Jaigad – the new glittering jewel on the West coast of India – will shortly see a container feeder service connecting it with two transshipment hubs – Jebel Ali and Colombo.

“The container feeder vessel originating from Jebel Ali will call at Colombo, Cochin, New Mangalore port before connecting Angre port directly with Jebel Ali,” said Shri Vijay Chowgule, Chairman, Chowgule Group.

“We expect a large percentage of the monthly 3,000-odd container originating from Kolhapur and Belgaum currently handled at JN Port to shift to Angré Port, once feeder service is operational,” Shri Chowgule said.

Located at Jaigad in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, Angré Port, an all weather port was awarded to the Goa based Chowgule Group in March 2008 by the Maharashtra Government for 50-year period as per the concession agreement on Build Own Operate Share and Transfer basis.

“Apart from bringing down the logistics costs and thereby making goods produced and traded in the region, competitive in the overseas markets, Angré Port will act as a catalyst to the development of Kolhapur emerging as the new manufacturing hub beyond the golden triangle of Mumbai, Pune and Nashik,” Shri Chowgule said.

Export-Import cargo from Kolhapur and Belgaum currently is handled from JN Port, which involves land transportation charges of about Rs 28,000 per container moving from Kolhapur and approx. Rs 35,000 for those moving from Belgaum.

“The environment friendly Angre Port, with an initial capacity of 16 million tons will focus on handling of clean cargo from the fast growing industrial areas of Maharashtra & Karnataka with focus on exports of marine & horticulture products, textiles, food grains, engineering products and chemicals,” said Shri M.P. Patwardhan, Managing Director of the port.
