Hallsberg linked to the Port of Gothenburg
SCT Transport and its supplier Tågfrakt have moved their operating base from Örebro to Hallsberg. Companies in Hallsberg now have their first rail shuttle to the Port of Gothenburg.
Hallsberg will become one of 22 towns and cities in Sweden and Norway with a direct rail link to the Port of Gothenburg.
"Swedish companies often face long distances to import and export markets and anything that can reduce the distance is vital to the competitiveness of industry," says Magnus Kårestedt, Port of Gothenburg Chief Executive.
The rail shuttle departs five days a week in both directions. The shuttle travels directly from the Hallsberg terminal to the Port of Gothenburg, where freight can be loaded rapidly onto vessels for export to various parts of the world, or from vessel to rail for direct transport to the Hallsberg terminal.
Stig-Göran Thorén, Head of Rail Operations at the Port of Gothenburg, feels that Hallsberg is a valuable addition to our rail shuttle system, Railport Scandinavia. "It will now be even easier for companies in central Sweden to reach the whole world with their freight in a way that is both efficient and environmentally wise."
The Hallsberg terminal offers a range of services adapted to different logistics and freight management needs, including storage, distribution and repacking of goods.
More and more freight is being transported by rail to and from the Port of Gothenburg. Last year, the port rail terminal handled 374,000 containers and new volume records are set every quarter.
The system also brings significant environmental benefits. In one year, around 50,000 tonnes of carbon emissions are saved compared to transport by road. This is equivalent to emissions from 17,000 cars over a full year.
At present there are 24 shuttles to 22 towns and cities in Sweden and Norway. Stockholm/Södertälje, Norrköping, Gävle, Borlänge, Helsingborg, Västerås, Vaggeryd, Sundsvall, Nässjö/Torsvik, Gothenburg, Karlstad, Åmål, Kristinehamn, Avesta, Hällefors, Insjön, Örebro, Hallsberg, Eskilstuna, Jönköping, Åhus and Oslo.
The Port of Gothenburg is the largest port in the Nordic region with 11,000 visits by vessels each year. One-third of Swedish foreign trade passes through the Port of Gothenburg as well as 65 per cent of all container traffic.
The Port of Gothenburg is the only port in Sweden with the capacity to receive the world's largest container vessels and has the broadest range of shipping routes within and outside Europe. The 24 rail shuttles that depart each day mean that companies throughout Sweden and Norway have a direct, environmentally smart link to the largest port in the Nordic region. The Port of Gothenburg has terminals for oil, cars, ro-ro, containers and passengers.
