    Jebel Ali port’s Terminal 3 in modernization mode

    DP World, UAE Region today signed agreements with local and international companies for the supply of 19 Ship To Shore (STS) quay cranes and 50 Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes for its 4 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) capacity Terminal 3 development at the flagship Jebel Ali Port, Dredging Today reports.

    The new container terminal will be 1,860 metres long, with a depth of 17 metres to handle multiple next generation container liners simultaneously, and a 70 hectare yard. Total capacity at Jebel Ali will reach 19 million TEU when Terminal 3 opens for business in 2014.

    The signing ceremony at DP World Head Office in Jebel Ali was attended by DP World Chairman HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Vice Chairman HE Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah, Group Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Sharaf, and Senior Vice President and Managing Director Mohammed Al Muallem DP World, UAE Region, among others.

    Also present were Fritz Hofbauer, Chief Executive Officer of Trans Gulf Port Cranes LLC (TGPC) of Abu Dhabi, which will supply and install 10 STS quay cranes and 25 RMG cranes, and Chen Weiping, Deputy Chief Commercial Manager, Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co Ltd (ZPMC), which will supply and install 9 STS and 25 RMG cranes.

    HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman, DP World, said:

    Obaid Bin Saleh Al Neaimi, Chairman of Trans Gulf Port Cranes LLC (TGPC), said:

    Chen WeipingYang Wenhui, Deputy Chief Commercial Manager of Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co Ltd (ZPMC), said:

We delivered our first crane to DP World in 2005 and our relations have gone from strength to strength ever since. The sophisticated technology that drives our quayside and gantry cranes is designed to deliver peak productivity and efficiency for our clients.”

    In the first six months of 2012 DP World, UAE Region, of which Jebel Ali is the leading facility, handled 6.6 million TEU, 7.3% ahead of the same period last year.
