Russian yachtsmen file counterclaim against Spanish police
Russian yachtsmen detained in Spain have filed a counterclaim against Spain’s police, an official at the Russian consulate-general in Barcelona told Itar-Tass on Tuesday. Earlier in the day the court of Palma de Mallorca postponed the trial until August 13.
“During a ten-day period before the trial begins the parties will search for possible compromise,” the official said.
The three yachtsmen Denis Rozhkov, Nikita Khrekov, and Roman Konstantinov are crewmembers of the RUS7 yacht participating in the Copa del Rey international sailing regatta.
They were arrested after an incident with police in Palma de Mallorca on July 28.
According to Spanish police, the Russians put up a resistance to police. Meanwhile, Executive Director of the Russian Sailing Federation Oskar Konyukhov noted that in the evening the yachtsmen returned to their hotel when they were surrounded by 8 policemen, who began to beat them with batons without providing any explanations. After that the police handcuffed the yachtsmen and brought them to a police station to hold them in a cell for 24 hours.
