Kuwait-led consortium in line for USD700 mln Aqaba port contract
The Kuwaiti-led Aqaba Gateway Group (AGG) is the preferred bidder for the contract to build a USD700m port at Jordan's maritime hub on its Red Sea coast. The Aqaba Development Corporation selected the consortium, led by Kuwait's KGL Investment, after analysing the group's technical and financial bids, which the AGG Consortium submitted in early July.
The AGG consortium also includes Kuwait & Gulf Link Transport Company, Greece's J&P, Portia from the UK, Deutsche Bank, a joint venture between US law firm Latham & Watkins and Jordan's Obeidat & Freihat, Cowi from Denmark, and Arcadis from Holland.
The Ayla New Port Consortium, led by France's Bouygues, is now the reserve bidder.
The winning bidder will form a 30-year public-private partnership with the Jordanian government to design, build and operate the port, which will be built in the city's southern industrial zone.
Aqaba New Port will replace the existing site as Jordan's main industrial port. The Jordanians will redevelop the current port and surrounding area with waterfront tourist and leisure facilities.
Once the port has opened, it will incorporate a general cargo and roll-on, roll-off terminal, as well as grain and ferry terminals.
