Kolkata port container througput up to 34,287 TEUs in July
Kolkata Dock System (KDS) handled a record 34,287 TEUs of container traffic in July 2009, according to The Economic Times.
This is the largest number of container shipments handled in a single month at the Kolkata docks, eclipsing the previous high of 33,219 TEUs in June 2009.
Significantly, during April-July, 2009, KDS handled an all-time high container traffic of 124,886 TEUs against 102,723 TEUs in April-July 2008 – a 21.57 percent growth over the corresponding period last year. In 2008-09 KDS handled 302,169 TEUs.
The improvement of containerisation at KDS has been possible due to multi-dimensional measures taken recently for improving operational efficiency of the container terminal at KDS including induction of state-of-the-art handling equipment, adoption of good operating practices and benchmarking certain productive services against international standards which are showing results.
Besides increasing customer focus coupled with various cost-saving measures for the port, users have helped in a major way to achieve the growth in container traffic through KDS.
