Eurogate Group H1 box volume down 10.1 percent
The Eurogate Group reported a first-half decline in container handling volume of 10.1 percent compared to 2008 as the slump in global trade continued to throttle consumer demand.
The German terminals of Bremerhaven and Hamburg, with a total of 3.3 million TEUs, have lost 19.5 percent of their handling volume.
The Bremerhaven terminal is down 20.8 percent on the previous year while the Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg is down 17.1 percent.
“The month of June was the strongest this year in terms of handling volume,” said Thomas Eckelmann, chairman of the Eurogate Group board.
“However, there are traditionally stronger and weaker months in container handling. We won’t know till the end of 2009 whether or not we can take this as a sign of market recovery. But it will certainly be some time before we are back at the 2008 level.”
The container terminals operated by the Italian Contship Italia Group maintained a more stable performance; thanks in particular to a positive handling trend at the CICT terminal in Cagliari, where it suffered an overall decline of only 2.9 percent to 2.7 million TEUs.
