India to build new coal terminal
The Indian port of Mormugao in the western state of Goa will have a new coal handling terminal after a local consortium was awarded the development contract, reports said.
The consortium led by Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Ltd, the largest private port in India, won the bid to build the terminal on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis, the company announced.
Director Rajeeva Ranjan Sinha said the contract involves development and operating a berth at Mormugao port to handle about 6.5 million tonnes of cargo per year.
The port is a key location for handling coal not only for industries in and around Goa, but also to feed the Bellary-Hospet region of Karnataka and southern Maharashtra.
The coal terminal at Mormugao is scheduled to commence operations in 2012. Project costs are unclear.
The project would have a concession period of 30 years in accordance with a concession agreement to be executed between the Mundra Port-led consortium and Mormugao Port Trust.
