Moller replaces Andersen as CEO of Maersk Oil
Thomas Thune Andersen, the chief executive of Maersk Oil and former president and CEO of Maersk in the U.S., will leave his position as CEO of Maersk Oil and partner of Firmaet A.P. Møller by the end of August, A.P. Moller-Maersk announced today.
The Danish company said the new CEO of Maersk Oil will be Jakob Thomasen who most recently has been head of exploration and business development in Maersk Oil. He will also become a member of the executive board of the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group.
The management change follows the decision last spring by A.P. Moller-Maersk CEO Nils S. Andersen, to focus the company’s investments on more profitable activities like oil and gas rather than on container shipping.
“Thomas Thune Andersen was offered an alternative position in the Group, which he, however, declined. A decision I regret,” Nils Andersen said in the announcement.
“We are now entering a new phase where exploration, field development and operating activities are top priorities and Jakob Thomasen has the right background for these activities,” Andersen said.
Thomas Thune Andersen has been with the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group for 32 years, a partner since 2005 and for the last five years CEO of Maersk Oil.
“During recent years, Thomas Thune Andersen has led the process of focusing the oil exploration activities and opening Maersk Oil to the outside world. This has been achieved successfully and Thomas Thune Andersen will be leaving a company almost twice the size as when he took over,” Nils Andersen said.
Thomasen, 47, was head of Maersk Oil’s activities in Qatar in the period 2004-2009. As a geologist, Jakob Thomasen began his career in Maersk Oil in 1988. He has extensive operational and international experience within exploration and production combined with strong management skills.
The owners of Firmaet A.P. Møller will subsequently be Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, Nils S. Andersen, Claus V. Hemmingsen, Eivind Kolding and Søren Skou.
The executive board will consist of Nils S. Andersen, Claus V. Hemmingsen, Eivind Kolding, Søren Skou and Jakob Thomasen.
