DP World Saigon terminal receives new cranes
Saigon Premier Container Terminal (SPCT) took its first of three major deliveries from Shanghai-based crane manufacturer for two quay cranes and four rubber tyre gantries (RTG) putting it on track for annual capacity of 1.5 million TEU come October, the Shipping Gazette informs.
SPCT chief executive Patrick Bol said the terminal, a joint venture between DP World (80 per cent) and Tan Thuan IPC (20 per cent), is near completion with over 1,000 workers laying final access roads as the mid-September deadline approaches.
Eventually, there will be 10 panamax and postpanamax quay cranes, 25 RTGs and an advanced Terminal Operating System Navis SPARCS by Phase Two.
"These eco-friendly RTGs have limited CO2 emissions and use 25 per cent less fuel. Working in a container yard with capacity of 16,000 TEU, the RTGs are capable of lifting one-over-five container tiers and stacking containers in six rows."
SPCT is located in Hiep Phuoc Industry Park in Nha Be district 15 kilometres south of Ho Chi Minh City centre. SPCT's Phase One will include a 500-metre berth, five quay cranes and 13 RTGs. The terminal will be able to handle two vessels with nominal capacity of 3,500 - 5000 TEU simultaneously. Upon completion of Phase Two, SPCT will occupy 40 hectares with 950 metres of berth on the bank of Soai Rap River.
The quay cranes are capable of handling panamax ships, with an outreach of 39 metres and 14 container rows on board ship. With lifting capacity of 65 tonnes under container spreader and 80 tonnes under hook, the cranes can lift two TEU at a time and can handle heavy project cargo too.
The delivery of the equipment was marked at a ceremony with DP World officials including Hua Ngoc Thuan, vice chairman of HCMC's People Committee; Vu Van Hoa, chairman of HCMC Export Processing and Industrial Zone Authority (HEPZA); Nguyen Hoang Phuong, manager of HEPZA's Construction Department; Vo Minh Thanh, chairman of Nha Be District's People Committee; Tran Tan Luc, Nha Be District Party Committee secretary and Nguyen Xuan Han, general director of Hiep Phuoc Industrial Park Joint Stock Company.
