Montana port plans $2.8m expansion
The Port of Montana is planning a US$2.8 million expansion to its warehouse, the Montana Standard reported.
George Paul, general manager of the port, made a presentation before the Tax Increment Finance Industrial District board, describing his plans and asking the board to help fund the project.
Paul said that the expansion is necessary because the port has recently been forced to turn away clients. It has run out of both storage and distribution space at its 80,000-square-foot facility located off Interstate 15 southwest of town.
Not only is its warehouse full, but its 25-acre lot in the South Butte Industrial Park is completely leased out as well.
"We've had to turn some things down," said Paul, which he called "kind of embarrassing" as the publicly owned port attempts to spur economic development for the area.
"We're really squeezed in," he said.
So to try to ease the overcrowding, Paul hopes to build a 40,000-square-foot facility that connects to the existing warehouse. He said he hopes to have the project out to bid by October and construction finished by January.
