    Vuosaari economy and ecology benefits

The new Finnish port Vuosaari, at a cost of 551.1 million euro, is to replace two current ports of Helsinki - Lansi satama and Sornaisnen satama - by 2008. As the PortNews IAA reported earlier, construction of the new base port infrastructure is financed by the port of Helsinki, due to proficiency of the budget of the port, and also due to attraction of borrowed funds (a city borrowing), and its cost will be equal to 313.7 million euro. Establishing of transport approaches to the port is financed on parity base with the city i.e. the Road Administration of Finland, Railway Administration of Finland and Sea Administration of Finland take part in it. The total amount of investments into construction of roads, tunnels and road junctions makes 237.4 million euro.
The port of Helsinki started construction of the Vuosaari port in January 2003. Territories of Valmetin telakka shipbuilding shipyard, which went bankrupt in1987, located east from the current ports, were chosen for the new project. This place was chosen not just by chance. There is a third circular road passing near the construction of the port and there is also an airport situated near. The port is separated from the city boundaries, which makes its location very convenient. The management of the port of Helsinki hopes, that there will be no traffic jams on the approaches to the new port.

The planned total area of the Vuosaari port will make 150 hectares, 90 hectares from which (or 12 million tons of a bulk ground) - alluvial territories. The port of Helsinki owns a right to rent this territory from the city till 2065. There will be constructed 20 berths for container cargoes and cargoes of rо-rо type in the port. According to Antti Makinen, a project director of the port of Helsinki, it is planned to reconstruct one of ship docks for a motor warehouse. According to the project, on territory of the port there will be two buildings for the office premises constructed, as well as premises for processing of cargoes and parking for vans.
Length of the railway passing along the territory of the port will be equal to 19 km, 14 km from which will pass along the tunnel. 2 power stations working on natural gas, Russian presumably, will provide Vuosaari with the electric power. It is planned within the limits of the project to carry out works on creation of a ship canal, with the length of 36 km and depth of 12.5 meters.

According to Antti Makinen the project of the new port has been designed by the port of Helsinki, with an attraction of experts from the branch. Several Finnish companies act as contractors on performing of construction works. The Belgian company carries out works on extraction of sand for alluvial territories. Now works on alluvium of additional territory, dredging and clearing the bottom of water area of the future port are intensively carried out, the power station is constructed, two parallel tunnels are cut down (for the safety of oncoming traffic), platforms for parking of vans are currently being prepared, works on creation of noise barrier are coming to an end.
It is planned to pull down premises of former shipyard and construct new buildings for offices. There also some places on territory of the port intended for "not profile", but according to Mr. Makinen, very close to the port business, enterprises. Next in turn comes the construction of a multilevel car flyover. After construction of a base infrastructure is over, the Artto Palo Rossi Tikka Oy Finnish company, according to the management of the port, will create a unique illumination. The main goal of architects is to light up only the port area but not territories adjoining to them. The company has won the tender and has a ready project.
Old cargoes to the new port
"The old ports are inconvenient from the point of location and unprofitable from the point of development, - Antti Makinen says, - however these ports will provide an initial cargo traffic to the new port. We expect, that in the first years of work at the Vuosaari port there will transhipped not less than 2.5 million tons of cargoes". According to Mr. Makinen, currently two large stevedoring companies operate in the port. Managements of the port hopes, that due to new capacities there will be an opportunity for work of one more stevedoring company.
    Ecology
As Mr. Makinen reports, the Vuosaari port is located 1.5 km separated from inhabited areas. A natural forest belt, the so-called security belt, is situated between the port and residential area of Helsinki. A wall of noise barrier will surround the eastern side of the port.
Even more complicated environmental problem of extracting the chemical substance – tributultin- used by shipyard for painting of the bottom part of the vessels hulls which are under construction here- out of the silted ground of the harbor, is being solved within the limits of construction of the new port. 10.5 million euro is allocated from the budget for the given works.

Old ports will be settled down
The Town-planning Committee of Helsinki develops a series of projects of residential areas, which are to grow on a place of the old ports. The city will start building construction right after replacing the capacities of Lansi satama and Sornaisnen satama to the new port. According to the existing project of a construction of houses, apartments for 30 thousand inhabitants will be constructed on territories of the former ports.
