Volume of cargo transported at the territory of Lithuania over the first half of 2006 grew by 3.7% to 54.6 million tons. This information has been provided by REGNUM IA referring to the Statistics Department of Lithuania (SDL). According to SDL, 48% of this volume was carried by road, 46.2% - by railway, 5.3% - by sea, 0.6% - by inland water, 0.004% by air. Comparing to the first half of 2005, the highest growth falls on cargo transported by railway (11.9%) and by sea (9.8%). Volume of cargo carried by air decreased by 57.4%, by road – by 3.6%. The report of SDL shows that 57.8% of cargo carried by railway is transit transportation. Transit transportation growth over the reported period was 18.1%.
