The building of new passenger terminal at port Korsakov will welcome first passengers in two years. Designing will take about a year and one more year is needed for construction. This was announced on February 5, 2016, at the meeting dedicated to the development of commercial seaport Korsakov, says the press center of Sakhalin government.

In his opening speech Oleg Kozhemyako, the Region Governor, said that “the modern passenger terminal should become a landmark of the renovated port. The main thing is the comfort of passengers travelling by both domestic and international routes”.

“We suggest building the terminal at the first berth of the port’s southern district. It will cover some 1,000 square meters. About a year is needed for designing and about the same for construction works”, said Vasily Kniglitsky, one of the owners of commercial seaport Korsakov.

The plan for Korsakov seaport development includes the repair and construction of quay walls and dredging operations. The works will be carried out by a joint stock company which is to be set up in the nearest future.

Oleg Kozhemyako also said the Sakhalin Development Corporation would grant a loan of RUB 2.5 bln for port infrastructure development. The return period is 20-25, which is a preliminary estimated payback period of the project. The port will also serve a base for a fishing cluster – a joint project of the regional authorities and Sberbank. The cluster components are fish processing and storage facilities, a fish exchange and ship repair facilities. The plots of land are already available. Specifications for a reefer facility will be ready within a month. The project will b managed by a joint stock company which is being established in the interests of Sakhalin and Sberbank. Both Russian and foreign investors are invited. Japan has already expressed its interest in Sakhalin based fish exchange.

Implementation of each project will be supervised by working groups headed by related Ministers. The report on first results is expected in several weeks.
