Commission of the Federal Service for the Oversight of Natural Resources insists on immediate termination of the construction of an 800-km oil-and-gas pipeline at Sakhalin. The Commission has today finalized inspection of a number of facilities of Sakhalin Energy Sakhalin-2 - operator. According to PRIME-TASS, the Commission members accompanied by Russian and foreign reporters visited the construction site of LNP plant and the site of oil-and-gas pipeline construction - 60 kilometers to the north from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Oleg Mitvol, deputy head of the Federal Service for the Oversight of Natural Resources, has stated that plenty of trees have been destroyed. Only the sited visited by the Commission has lost 50 hectares of wood – a damage of 14-15 million rubles. The Commission announced that aerial photographic survey of the whole island of Sakhalin is to be carried out in the near future. It will provide the possibility to compare the island’s appearance before and after the project started. All the information as regards breaches of Russian environment legislation will be furnished to the prosecutor’s office. Thorough monitoring of Aniva Bay waters to be carried out in 2007.
