Toyota to establish new Vehicle Logistics Centre in port of Sagunto, Spain
Toyota Motor Europe announced today that it plans to establish a new Vehicle Logistics Centre (VLC) in the port of Sagunto (Port Authority of Valencia).
This will support the continuing sales growth of Toyota Espana, by providing facilities to store, prepare and deliver Toyota vehicles for the Spanish market. The new development will create additional jobs at the Port and will require investment from both the Port Authority and Toyota.
Toyota Motor Europe has requested a concession from the Port Authority of Valencia for a 200,000 m² area inside the port of Sagunto for a period of 20 years. The new facility is planned to open in spring of 2008 and should process more than 80 000 vehicles in its first full year of operations.
Sagunto will become the 9th VLC of Toyota Motor Europe and represents the latest element of the company’s pan-European logistics strategy in support of the growth of Toyota in Europe. 70% of all vehicles handled by the new Port of Sagunto facility will originate from Toyota’s European plants in Turkey, United Kingdom, France, Czech Republic and Portugal. 90% of these vehicles will arrive by sea.
The port of Sagunto was chosen as the optimal location to support Toyota sales growth in Spain after an extensive joint study by Toyota Motor Europe and Toyota España. Toyota sales in Spain have grown from 27.000 units in 2001 to 74.000 units in 2006, with a sales target of 78.000 units in 2007.
The Port Authority of Valencia has significant growth plans for the port of Sagunto. Finished vehicle capacity expansion will take centre stage in these plans and Toyota’s VLC will be a cornerstone of this business, helping to attract greater traffic to Sagunto.
The Port Authority of Valencia will invest approximately 14 million EUR in new infrastructure for the port of Sagunto in support of this project. Toyota will invest an additional 10 million EUR in new buildings and equipment. Toyota Motor Europe expects this project to create 60 to 100 new jobs.
Total investment in new infrastructure dedicated to vehicle logistics activities in the port of Sagunto will exceed 57 million euros and will occupy around 47 hectares, which include a new multi-client vehicle terminal to be located in the immediate vicinity of Toyota’s VLC.
The multipurpose roll-on, roll-off terminal in the port of Valencia handles the vast majority of vehicle traffic and acts as hub for several lines. In 2006 it registered an increase in volume up to 470.000 units. However, the Chairman of the Port Authority of Valencia, Mr. Rafael Aznar, is confident that the new multi-client vehicle terminal of the port of Sagunto will play an important role in the distribution of imported vehicles in the Iberian Peninsula, with an expected volume in excess of 250.000 units when fully operational.
