Kaliningrad and Byelorussian railways recommence operation of Mercury container train
Kaliningrad and Byelorussian railways decided to recommence operation of a container train Mercury running between Kaliningrad/Klaipeda – Minsk – Moscow, press center of Kaliningrad Railway reports according to REGNUM news agency. According to the press center, the volume of railway transportation between Kaliningrad region and Byelorussia grew 1.5 times from the beginning of 2007 as compared with the same period of 2006.
In January-August 2007, the volume of cargo delivered from Byelorussia to Kaliningrad region totaled 677,000 tonnes (+2.4%, year-on-year). The majority of export volumes consists of mineral-and-construction cargo (+63%); timber (+46%), chemical and mineral fertilizers (+50%), cement (+29%). In the opposite direction the railways carried 46,000 tones of cargo (+63%). Import consisted mainly of paper (11,500 tonnes), fish and fish products (3,000 tonnes).
