IMO expected to toughen ecological requirements in shipping: “Bunker Market. Prices” digest
- Norwegian Shipowners’ Association (NSA) calls for IMO to toughen ecological requirements in shipping. According to the NSA statement, its members will only order vessels based on zero-emission technology from 2030. Obviously, the NSA is supported by the countries which are currently the key suppliers of technologies and equipment needed for decarbonization of the industry.
Meanwhile, the use of LNG and methanol in shipping is being increasingly promoted worldwide. Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) says its fleet will number 90 LNG/methanol-fueled vessels in service by 2030.
However, a climate neutral fleet is fleet running on fuel produced with the use of renewable energy sources. SoLNG or methanol do not meet the requirement.
In this context, it is worth noting that OCI Global has announced it is fueling the first ever green methanol-powered container ship in a new partnership with A.P. Moller-Maersk. OCI will provide ISCC certified green biomethanol to power the maiden voyage of Maersk’s first dual-fueled container ship, in a pioneering step towards the decarbonization of global shipping.
