Europe H1 imports off 21pc: ELAA
European imports have fallen 21 per cent in the first half, while exports from the continent are trending upwards, according to European Liner Affairs Association (ELAA) figures.
In a statement released by the ELAA earlier this week it notes that although the import trend is generally down, the 21 per cent average decline across all trades to Europe does "hide" some regional variations.
"The Asia to West Mediterranean/North Africa trade, for example, is showing a decline against the volumes in the first half of 2008 of 13.8 per cent, but the overall trend shows no overall sign of recovery," the statement said.
Quarter-on-quarter eastbound volumes have shown some improvement after volumes fell 14 per cent in the first quarter, compared to a 10 per cent decline in the second.
On the export side, Europe to Asia volumes have increased by 97,000 TEU quarter to quarter, while declines in both the Asia and Indian subcontinent Mideast Gulf trades have slowed from -15.49 per cent to -2.46 per cent and -5.20 per cent to -4.72 per cent respectively in the second quarter.
