HYUNDAI Merchant Marine selected as Climate Performance Leader for fourth consecutive year
On October 28, HMM was recognized as a “Carbon Management Sector Winner for the Industrial Material Transport Division” at the Climate Performance Leadership Awards, the company said in its press release.
Organized by the Korean Commissions Committee for Carbon Disclosure Project (KCC-CDP), the awards ceremony was held at 63 City building in Seoul. HMM is the first domestic shipping company to be awarded for a fourth consecutive year, and the only company awarded in the industrial material transport division. To select winners, the KCC-CDP looked at the top 250 Korean companies, according to aggregate value of listed stocks on KOSPI, evaluating their systems and strategies for dealing with climate change, performance in reducing greenhouse gases, and transparency in disclosing information on greenhouse gases.
The CDP is the most authoritative non-profit organization that analyzes and announces outcomes of world leading companies in dealing with climate change. HMM has succeeded in cutting down 21% of its greenhouse gas emissions year-on-year through various energy-friendly technologies such as eco-steaming, an economic driving method, and nose-job retrofits, involving the changing of bulbous bows for energy efficiency.
An HMM official said, “As a leading maritime carrier, one of our basic and most critical duties is to protect the environment. Although HMM is currently passing through difficult times with recession in the maritime industry, we will continue to expand our environment- friendly management.”
