Containership carriers on the main eastbound Europe-Asia route to increase rates for the spring period
The Far Eastern Freight Conference (FEFC), which includes lines such as AP Moller and Mediterranean Shipping Co, is set to add between $40 and $100 per container to the rates charged for the traditionally weak eastbound leg into Asia.
General cargo will see an increase of $40, as will waste paper, scrap and lumber. However cargo in reefer containers will see a larger increase of $100 per container.
The new prices will apply from 1 March to 31 May for the general and reefer cargo loads, though waste and lumber rates are for just 1-31 March.
The 15 member lines of the conference are hoping for an increase in demand in 2007 to offset their poor performance last year, which was driven partly by a massive influx of new tonnage.
The group handles about 60 percent of trade between Asia and Europe.
