Port of Liepaja (Latvia) handled 1.18 million tonnes of cargo in Jan-Feb'2019, down 14.6% Y-o-Y

Freight volume handled in the Port of Liepaja, Latvia in January-February 2019 fell by 14.6%, year-on-year, to 1.18 million tonnes, the Port Authority told IAA PortNews.

In the reporting period, transshipment of grain fell by 28.8% to 506,200 tonnes, anthracite – fell by 17.6% to 179,800 tonnes, construction materials – grew by 6.7% to 103,500 tonnes while transshipment of oil products fell by 46.6% to 45,200 tonnes.

Container traffic increased by 20% to 479 TEUs, handling of Ro-Ro cargo grew by 11% to 6,371 units.

The number of calls grew by 10% to 286, passenger traffic decreased by 15% to 4,415 passengers.

Port of Liepaja was founded in the 90s of last century at the former Soviet Union’s naval base. Liepaja ranks third port of Latvia by handled cargo volume. Half of the port’s cargo throughput is fueled by crude oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, largely from Belorussia. In 2018, throughput of Liepaja port was 7.54 million tonnes.
