Westports Malaysia H1 volume up 17 percent to 3.1 million TEU

Westports Malaysia in the first half saw volume rise 17 percent year-over-year to 3.1 million 20-foot container equivalent, as the port operator expands at Malaysia's top container gateway, Journal of Commerce reports. The operator, which has a 66 percent share of containers handled Port Klang, said it was moving forward to build a 3,937-foot berth by 2013 to relieve port congestion.
The extra berths will add an annual capacity of 9 million TEUs. Westports Malaysia CEO Ruben Emir Gnanalingam told The Sun Daily, a Malaysian newspaper, that he is optimistic the company will handle 6.3 million TEUs this year, up 800,000 TEUs from 2010.
