Port of Helsinki posts a 5 percent gain to 6.8 million tons
Cargo throughput of the port of Helsinki for 8 months of 2011 rose by nearly 5 percent compared with the same period last year, 6.8 million tons, the Port Authority statistics said.
In the reporting period imports rose 6 percent from last year’s numbers, to 3.5 million tons, exports were up 3 percent to 3.3 million tons.
In August the port handled 841,000 tons, up 1 percent from a year earlier.
Passenger traffic also increased about 6% to 7.1 million people, in August – by 4% to 1,074,000.
In January-July, the port saw 174 calls of cruise ships, 6 ships more than a year before, which brought to the city 225,000 tourists (+13%).
Port of Helsinki is a largest port in Finland. Cargo throughput of the port in 2010 grew by 12% y-o-y to 10,921,000 tons, container traffic rose 11% to 399,903 TEUs and Ro-Ro cargo shipments totaled 488,772 units (+ 13%).
