Chennai dockers stage wildcat strike after container truck kills worker

A wildcat docker strike in Chennai, India's second biggest container port, has paralysed shipments in and out after a worker was killed when a container-laden truck collided with his motorcycle, Shippingazette reports.

Vijay Kumar, 53, of Chennai Port Trust, was riding his motorbike when he was struck down by the truck. The driver has been arrested on charges of negligence. CPT chairman Atulya Misra has ordered an inquiry into the accident and has assured employees that steps would be made to check movement of trucks inside the port.

The strike has created long queues of trucks, said a shipping line agent, reported the Hindu daily newspaper. "Overall, yard movements and operations at the terminals are pretty slow, affecting import deliveries and export loadings," the agent added.

The strike has followed a series of industrial actions impacting the DP World and the PSA International-operated container terminals, causing shipping lines to introduce emergency surcharges to compensate for delays.

The terminal inventory now totals 17,000 TEU of which 11,000 TEU are imports.
