Manila port upgrades radiation detection equipment
The Philippine port of Manila has heightened security measures following an upgrade of radiation detection equipment, Seatrade Asia online reports.
The new radiation detection systems are now incorporated at Asian Terminals, Inc.'s South Harbor and the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. Manila International Container Terminal.
The technology is part of the US Department of Energy's Megaports Initiative to help deter, detect, and interdict illicit shipments of nuclear and other radioactive materials that might pass through international gateways such as seaports.
The US government contributed $26m to set up the facility in the Philippines.
